I am sitting here at the table looking across at an orange, a fruit. It's not a vegetable or a grain it's a fruit. Did you every wonder why God uses the word fruit for the actions of a faithful righteous Christian. We bare fruit as we live as God's children. Yes we always see the word fruit. Why?
I would like to explore this with you the reader. Please join me and be active in this discussion after you read my dissertation, write a comment or two.
It started at the beginning, after God created all things including man and woman. God gives the command, you may eat of fruit of all the trees of the garden, but the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden you can not eat. Simple enough, but we know what happened, Eve and Adam ate of the forbidden fruit and sinned. The rest is history. The word fruit is predominant in the story, from the command to the sin to the promise of a Savior.
In the dictionary the definition is such: a product of plant growth( grain, vegetable, or cotton)
a dish, quantity or diet
the edible part of a plant
a product of fertilization
offspring
the effect or consequence of an action
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit, apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5 NIV. Here we have Jesus telling us that if we are with Jesus, we will bear fruit. This is a positive product of Faith in Jesus. We, because of this faith, bear produce give out the light of Jesus our Savior to the world.
It just a logical word usage of fruit for this picture.
Fruit is a food that we need to live. Fruits, vegetables, grains, and meats give our bodies the nutrition to continue in this life. Jesus and his Word gives our spiritual bodies the nutrition to sustain our soul for the future life in heaven. The use of the word fruit in the Bible is a good illustration to keep us on track to continue to feed our souls. Just as we need fruit for the earthly body, we need fruit for the spiritual body.
When a person eats he grows, when a soul eats it grows. Like a plant that grows and produces fruit, a Christian grows and produces fruit. The fruit of a Christian is shining the light of faith on others, through sharing the Gospel, doing good around the community, being a good child, a good husband and father, being a good wife and mother. I like the word fruit.
